History of JARM

1963 Japanese Association of Rehabilitation Medicine (JARM) was established on September 29.
1964 First Annual Meeting of JARM was held.
First issue of “Japanese Journal of Rehabilitation Medicine” was published.
1968 JARM became a member society of the Japanese Association of Medical Sciences.
1980 Medical specialist system started in Japan and Japanese Board of Rehabilitation Medicine was established.
1987 Board-Certified Physiatrists system started.
[International Rehabilitation Medicine Association (IRMA) VIII Congress was held in Kyoto.
1989 JARM became an Incorporated Association.
1996 Use of the name “Rehabilitation Department” was adopted under the laws.
2001 JARM was listed as one of the 18 basic specialties of the Japanese Medical Specialty Board.
New Millennium Asian Symposium was held in Tokyo.
2003 New certification/education system started.
2009 A network for female physiatrists called “Rehabilitation Joy Network” (RJN) was established.
2011  “Working Group for Great East Japan Earthquake” and “Strategic Council of 10 Rehabilitation Support Bodies for Great East Japan Earth Quake” were formed to support victims of 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami.
2012 JARM became a Public Interest Incorporated Association.
2013 Various ceremonies and events were held to commemorate JARM’s 50th anniversary.
2016 Total number of JARM members grew to 11,249 (10,946 doctors and 303 others) as of August 31, 2018.
